Overview

The Pacific War was a complicated series of events, strategies and battles. The Pacific war had a tempo that can be defined in four phases. Along with a map and timeline, here is a simplified overview of the war in the Pacific.

Strategy

Every battle was a part of each nation's strategy for victory. Japan and America had two different strategies but only one would lead to victory.

This is an in-depth look at the Pacific war, from start to finish. Elmore was just a small part of a much bigger picture.

Tokyo Rose

The most famous female broadcaster of the 20th century was "Tokyo Rose." She was an American citizen of Japanese heritage. Her story will surprise you.

Magic

A brief overview of the importance of the codebreaking of Japanese naval codes. the Battle of Midway was the turning point of the war and the Navy codebreakers gave Admiral Nimitz the key to victory in that campaign.

Kamikaze

The tradition of death instead of defeat, capture and shame, was deeply entrenched in Japanese military culture. This was the basis of the kamikaze attacks during the war, pilots who initiated suicide attacks on Allied naval vessels. Elmore dodged the bullet but her sister ships were not as lucky.

The Atomic Bomb

America was set to invade the home islands of Japan in November 1945. The lessons of Okinawa suggested that the invasion would cost a million American lives and many more Japanese lives. The two atomic bombs stopped the war and, ironically, saved lives on both sides.

Surrender

Even in the face of certain defeat, Japan, at first, refused to surrender. Only after two atomic bombs were used on Japan did they finally concede. We take you aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 to witness the formal surrender ceremony.

Occupation

With the surrender of Japan, the U.S. military shifted from war to occupation. Elmore participated in landing occupation troops into Japan at Wakayama and Mitsugahama in 1945. Learn about those places as they look today along with the history of the American occupation of Japan.

Commentaries

When you look closely at history, at specific events, you may be surprised at what you learn. Not everything is as it seems. This is where you get to take a closer look at what went on behind the scenes.
